Numerous tasks must be completed if ideas found acceptable on the BeyondVoting Wiki are to be transformed into an improved governance system.

  • Decide on an organization structure: an independent 501 (c)(3); affiliation with an existing non-profit; other.
  • Make civics a key part of the curriculum of the city's public schools.
  • Make presentations and distribute materials to the public.
April 20, 2005 - Emails announcing wiki's opening and encouraging participation sent to several hundred people on Mr. Lowenhaupt’s mailing list, many of whom are governance and/or technology leaders with ideas and influence on the project’s focus areas.
May 3, 2005 - Distributed flyer at NYC Charter Revision Commission Meeting at St. Francis College, Callahan Center, Brooklyn Heights. (There were about 20 people attending.)
May 2005 - Lists focused on democracy, local governance, and the digital divide, were appraised of BeyondVoting. If you're on a list and don't recall receiving a notice about BeyondVoting, post info about the effort.
June 15, 2005 - Made presentation at NYC Charter Revision Commission Meeting at New York University. (Received call saying tape of event was being played on cable access channel 74 on July 26, 2005 at 8 AM.)
August - September 2005 - Present wiki to college and university students: approach political science, urban studies, planning, computer science, environment, ethics, government, law, and sociology schools/departments.
September 2005 – June 2006 - Arrange face to face meetings with the 59 community boards. Start with Queens CB 3. Make presentation and distribute flyers.
September 2005 - Invite 51 council members, the mayor, borough presidents, and other city officials by e- and postal mail to contribute their thoughts to the wiki. Visit all city council offices and meet with elected representatives whenever possible. Paper brochures will be distributed during all visits.
September 2005 - Contact Good Government Groups for presention and major civic organizations, local city websites, traditional media, and good government groups will be visited, with presentation made if possible. City Club.
  • August 2005 - Develop QPTV outreach effort "Community Goverance - Democracy's Entryway"
  • October 2005 - Discuss project with OSI Fellowship Network members. Appraise them of projects goals, solicit their opinions on BeyondVoting’s project planp and encourage their participation on wiki.
  • February 2006 - Evaluate moving the wiki to a dedicated domain, perhaps BeyondVoting-NYC.org.
  • September 2006 – March 2007 - Present recommendations to the public. Solicit approval of mayor, city council, and charter revision commission for recommendations.
  • October 2006 - Conference sponsored by BeyondVoting, local good government groups, community boards, and elected officials. To be held at a university, the conference will review the status of the wiki recommendations and seek input from non-participants in the wiki. Seniors, immigrant groups, and others not proportionally active on the wiki will be sought as conference attendees. Agreement will be sought for a suitable set of recommendations to be brought to the mayor, city council, and the public (through the charter revision process), as appropriate.
  • September 2005 – March 2007 - Recruit supporters and create organization to develop and implement the recommendations. Maintain wiki, website and other communication channels.
  • April 2007 – November 2007 - Working through a network of supporters recruited throughout the project period, convey the project’s benefits to city officials and the public. Encourage approval of charter revisions on the November ballot.

At each step a register of project supporters should be broadened.
